The spirit of the Chinese people is written by National Master Gu Hongming, who is a master of languages and a famous scholar. He devoted himself to his motherland and propagated the oriental culture and spirit to the westerners, which had a great impact.
This book aims to illustrate the spirit of the Chinese people and demonstrate the value of Chinese civilization. The author believes that the real Chinese people and Chinese civilization are characterized by deep, broad, simple and sensitive, which is not fully possessed by other countries. The author tried to interpret that instead of violence, we resort to righteousness and propriety, which means to practice justice, respect and courtesy, and to be well-cultivated. This is the secret and essence of Chinese civilization.
In this book, the author elaborates and shows the spirit of the Chinese people, and gives great affirmation and compliment. One of the spiritual traits of the Chinese people is gentleness and elegance. Just as the book says, the real Chinese may be course, but there is no grossness in his coarseness. …. Although there are quite a few shortcomings in the Chinese people, these will not be bad to any extent. Chinese people live a spiritual life, a childlike life. The real life of the Chinese people is not only the rationality of adults, but also the soul of children. In Mr. Gu’s eyes, the Chinese people may have various shortcomings and defects, but they also have authenticity, simplicity, beautiful spiritual qualities and unique wisdom. Mr. Gu’s deep and meticulous excavation of the Chinese spirit, hi s unique views and heartfelt compliment fully shows his deep love for the Chinese people and Chinese civilization, which touches everyone’s heart deeply. In the meanwhile, the author also puts forward some original views. For instance, Confucianism can replace religion and make individuals no longer need religion. Similarly, the author compares the differences between religion and Confucianism, and so on, which is thought-provoking.
However, the author’s exposition of Chinese ideal women makes it difficult for me to identify with the new era. The author believes that real ideal woman is always a housewife, who is selfless, gentle, shy and patient. In addition, the author also subscribes to the concubinage system and attempts to defend it, which is really unacceptable. Although concubinage is a Chinese tradition, it is essentially a bad habit. The self-sacrifice and dedication of Chinese women advocated by the author are essentially a moral kidnapping of women, which contributes to tremendous mental pressure and exploitation of women. I cannot but say that Mr. Gu Hongming is somewhat too traditional, but his vigorous maintenance of Chinese culture is admirable and touching.
Moreover, the author talks about Chinese language, mob worship, war and other topics, fully demonstrating Mr. Gu’s versatility and profound thinking. Mr. Gu’s great achievements are undeniable, but his attitude towards Chinese civilization is still slightly one-sided. From my perspective, Mr. Gu should not blindly praise Chinese tradition, but should see the superiority and essence of Chinese tradition as well as its drawbacks and dross. We Chinese should have cultural self-confidence, but not blindly self-confidence. We should treat the differences between Chinese and foreign civilizations with a rational attitude.
In any case, the Chinese spirit and Chinese civilization have always been precious spiritual treasure of the Chinese people, which is worthy of inherence and development. I sincerely hope that the future will be better and better.
