Gatsby-----great tragedy
Before reading the book,I had watched the movie "The Great Gatsby".This film had brought me a lot of confusion. I wanted to find out from the original work - what caused such a love tragedy?Where is Gatsby really great? Later, I read the Chinese and English bilingual versions of this novel completely and thoroughly, and some question had answers in my heart.so I have feeling to talk about this book.
There is no doubt that "The Great Gatsby" wrote a tragedy that described the destruction of a man from the body to the spirit. The whole story can be summarized as follows: An infatuated man falls in love with a material woman, which exposes the ruthlessness of the upper class in that period.Lu Xun said: "The real tragedy is to tear the beautiful things into pieces to people."I think that this novel is very consistent in terms of narrative style, storyline, and character description. The ending of this story is that Gatsby was shot, which added more tragic colors to the full text.
What is the deeper reason for Gatsby’s tragedy? Gatsby's pursuit is the common pursuit of ordinary people from the bottom of the society at home and abroad. A society born of poor people through their own efforts, gaining wealth, completing counterattacks, and getting equal or even higher with the children of the upper classes of society status. This is not only the American dream, but also the Japanese dream, the European dream and even the Chinese dream. However, in that period ,with the development of society, the gap between the rich and the poor has widened, interest groups have grown, the classes have been solidified, and opportunities have become increasingly unequal. Such dreams have easily become chicken soup. Daisy is a material women ,but daisy just is a symbol of the people in that period.Gatsby thought that by accumulating wealth, he could advance to the upper class and realize his dreams. He did not know that people born in the upper class simply looked down on people who obtained wealth through disgraceful means. Even if they had a lot of money, they still think that Gatsby is not equal to their status. That is the social reason of Gatsby’ tragedy.
For me, Gatsby’s greatness is that he can spend five years to protect the green light in his heart and try to find the goodness, even though he knows that Daisy is already a woman who worships gold. However, he is still willing to carry a black pot for her; even though his source of money is not clean, he is still nobler than the upper class depicted in the book. Although he is deceiving, he does not deceive the feelings, and those who are in the upper class any can lie for enjoyment.
the connotations expressed in this story will not be destroyed at any time. What Fitzgerald wrote is not a lame triangle relationship, nor a imaginary rebellion, but a story about dreams. Life is precious, love is higher; if it is a dream, both can be thrown. It’s just a dream, it may not be realized. As written at the end of this novel:
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
