Running for Gov

Shirleen
Running for governor is one of Mark Twain's earliest works. This article images a story about his campaign for governor. Mark Twain was nominated for governor of New York as a candidate of the Independent Party, running against two other candidates from the other parties. At first, he felt that he had one distinct advantage over the other two men, that was his good character. However, from that on, his life has changed a lot. Every day there were articles in the newspapers accusing him of something he had never done. What's worse, some people went to his house to make trouble. Finally, Mark Twain was so plagued by rumors that he had to give up the running for governor.
This story, written in a humorous style, exposes the ugly fact that the candidates in the American election at that time would do anything to get elected. It criticizes the hypocrisy of American’s “democratic politics”. An honest man takes part in the free election, then he becomes the worst person in the world. This tells us that sometimes the so-called “democratic politics” is just the excuse of some politicians. The politicians use it to get their power.
In the long road of life, we will often meet opponents. When we compete with our rivals, please do not resort to slander to win a temporary victory. We should keep our feet on the ground and show our real strength to our opponents. Only in this way can we achieve real victory and make our life more valuable.
