Dr. Manet is thrown into the Bastille for denouncing the wickedness of the aristocracy, and his orphaned daughter, Lucy, is brought up in London. The aristocratic young man Darney, hating his family's sins, gives up his family's property to become a French teacher in London, during which he develops sincere feelings for Lucy. By this time, Manet has been released and he readily agrees to their marriage with a generous heart, but Darney is constantly framed by Madame de Farge, who comes from the lower class and has a great hatred for the aristocracy. Carton, who had been in love with Lucy, voluntarily took the place of Darnay on the guillotine, and Lucy and Darnay went away.
