    Dr. Manet is thrown into the Bastille for denouncing the wickedness of the aristocracy, and his orphaned daughter, Lucy, is brought up in London. The aristocratic young man Darney, hating his family's sins, gives up his family's property to become a French teacher in London, during which he develops sincere feelings for Lucy.
