    This paper first reviews the social and historical factors of American Dream, then analyzes Gatsby’s consistent pursuit of dream, and finally reveals the historical origin and essence of American Dream. The causes for Gatsby’s disillusion of American Dream are mainly discussed, namely, Gatsby’s innocence, Daisy’s ruthlessness, social background and the deception of American Dream. It is concluded that the corruption of values and the decline of spiritual life contribute to the failure of Gatsby’s dream. This study also intends to enlighten young dream-seekers in China: to avoid the tragedy of Gatsby, we have to develop a sound social system and set right spiritual beliefs.
