Before reading The Great Gatsby, I always thought it was a story about a loser going against the trend and becoming a successful person, or a stereotypical idol drama about an elite guarding wealth and gaining love in the business war. But this is a great story of a loser who struggled hard in order to pursue pure love. In the era of materialism and money first, facing the dirty speculation and vicious frame, he still maintained his faith in faithful love until death. The story does not give a detailed description of how Gatsby became Gatsby from Gatz, and how he strove and finally entered the upper class, because these things can not show Gatsby's greatness. This is actually a love story, and Gatsby's greatness reflects in his guarding and yearning for faithful love. He did not know who had killed him until he died, and he still believed that his lover loved him most, and he was still willing to work hard to protect her. Little did he know that five years have passed, she may not have been the original simple lovely, energetic girl, perhaps she was always not. She has always been just a perfect lover just in his mind. Gatsby was a genius in the business, because he only used several years to earn enough money and made himself celebrated. But in his mind, he can never get rid of inferiority mentality of the poor, never can avoid the lowliness, embarrassment, tension. Every time he faced Daisy, he may not understand the idea of Daisy and her marriage, and he did not how much she depended on money and position. He tried so hard to get close to her, to satisfy her, to protect her, but he died because of her and her husband. So Nick finally said Gatsby, "'You're worth the whole bunch put together. ' " This is Nick's words from his heart, because only Gatsby can still maintain a pure heart to pursued pure love, in this dirty society. Maybe many people thought the ending of Gatsby was so sad that feel it was not a worthy death, especially he did not know the slight smile on Daisy's face after his death. But this was Gatsby's choice. He chose to ignore Daisy's voice stinking with money and regarded her as the embodiment of all the beautiful things. So the ending of Gatsby is inevitable! Despite the historical background in the novel, there is no need to talk about right or wrong and there is no need to be compassionate or reprimanded. Because for Gatsby, his heart was full and happy before his sacrifice.
