The scarlet letter A

When reading this book,I have always thought about one question:What does the scarlet letter A means? Fortunately, after finishing the novel,I find some meanings about the scarlet letter A. From the surface,first,the scarlet letter A means adultery.According to calvinism, Hester had to wear the scarlet letter "A" as the puritans punished the criminals of adultery, and those who wore the letter would be criticized and insulted by the public. Second, it means able, admirable and angel. Hester was good at needling , which she could support her and her little daughter. What's more, Hester also money to poor people and helped them. Therefore, the scarlet letter A was no longer seemed as sin. Hester effort by herself and made the meaning of the scarlet A became a sign of kind and merciful. Besides, Hester was beloved and respected by the townpeole. Maybe this is the power of human beings nature. Hawthorne made A brilliant use of symbolism to select the symbol "A" with multiple meanings, and explained the complex thinking behind the event with the polysemous character of "A". In a deeper sense, first,the scarlet A represents the love between Hester and Arthur dimmesdale. Hester due to family a rundown to marry old and ugly chillingworth, When Hester met handsome young after dimmesdale, lonely soul under the passion slowly towards dimmesdale, and determined to meet no matter what the storm fiercely, willing to sacrifice themselves to protect lover, pay any price for this love. Second,It stands for Artificiality, revealing the hypocrisy of religion and its loyal followers. The puritans were thrifty, but the puritans lived well; Dimmesdale, who should have been punished by exposing the truth according to the doctrine, still preached from the holy altar, disguised as an emissary of god, and preserved his existing position and reputation. Although he finally stood on the scaffold, he did not directly admit the crime of adultery, with the death of the body to free the vulnerable soul of the sin. Third,It stands for animosaty. Chillingworth's hatred of dimmesdale. For seven years, supported by a vengeful conviction, he never ceased to observe dimmesdale, and to peer into his heart. Revenge has become the only content and purpose of Chillingworth's life. When the plan of revenge is put into practice step by step, he is gradually becoming a devil. But when dimmesdale finally stands on the scaffold and reveals his guilt, he does not show the excitement of a successful avenger, for at that moment he has lost the purpose of life, and becomes a sinner to the abyss of crime. No matter what the meaning the scarlet letter A representation,we can think and learn from them.
