David Copperfield is a book which can encourage people to improve
their moral character. It makes me feel that it is important and
beneficial to be a good person in this world. That’s why Russian writer
Лев Николаевич Толстой considered it as ‘the best one among all the
British novels’. The main character David Copperfield had a tragic fate
in his childhood. His father died before he was born and he was raised
by his mother and maid. However, his mother found a stepfather for him.
This vicious man saw David as a burden and drive him away. David was
adopted by his wet nurse’s brother. Luckily, the life there was
harmonious. However, missing his mother, David went back to his
stepfather’s house. As a result, David was often abused by his
stepfather and even sent to be a child labor when he was only ten years
old after his mother died. In those days, David earned about only six
pence a week and often went hungry. Finally, David was adopted by his
aunt. She was eccentric but kind and planned to send David to school.
Although David grew up, he still had a difficult life. His friend Emily
was tempted by a son of rich families and eloped with him. What’s
ridiculous is that her fiancé tried to save him but died in an accident.
David’s aunt was running out because of Shipp’s plot and David took
great pains to help her expose Shipp’s plot, letting him admitting his
guilt. To David himself, he got married to Dora and became a writer due
to his great effort. However, their married life wasn’t that perfect and
Dora suffered from serious illness. After she died, David travelled
abroad alone with a sorrowful heart. Finally, David came back home and
got married to Ennis, who had loved him for a long time. In my opinion,
I would evaluate this book as ‘mediocre thinking, calm affect’. This
book is too ideal. The writer uses no euphuism but frankly describe what
are good and evil in his mind. This trick makes this book suitable for
both young and old, bringing much impact simply and accurately like a
scalpel. The sentence which touches me most is that David’s aunt told
him;’ Never humble, never hypocritical, never cruel.’ I think it means
cowardice in one’s heart. As I grow up, I really respect those who
follows their heart and love themselves. I am not brave enough not to be
self-abased and vainglorious so I am really envious of those people.
Even if they don’t achieve success in the future, they will remain
indifferent whether granted favors or subjected to humiliation till the
end of their life. All in all, David Copperfield describes an ideal
story. In this story, good and evil must at last have their reward. It
is too ideal but we can still feel a little touched.
