Book Review
David Copperfield, with the full title of The Personal
History,Advantures,Experience and Observation of David Copperfield
the Younger of Blunderstone Rookery ,is a famous
autobiographical novel by Charles Dickens. It first published in 1850
,october in London ,and imediately had a great influence to the society.
David Copperfield tells a story about the growth of David and the people around him. David had a miserable childhood because of his mother’s remarriage, especially after his mother’s death. He then fled to his aunt Betsey, who proteced and raised him. After he grew up,he met a lot of people .Some of his friends were in trouble ,but they faced them together and eventually overcomed the difficulties.David , with his honesty and deligent ,found his true love and finally lead a happy life.
As my point of view, David Copperfield is a fascinating and wonderful book. It shines not only because its interesting story, but also because the distinct character it has created. The progress of David’s growth is a very winding but attractive group of stories. When he was abused by his father-in-law ,we are so sad and furious about this, while when it comes to David engaged Dora,it seems so pleased and delighted to us. That is the enchantment of the book. As for the character, everyone is a individual in this book. They are all complicated, contain both advantages and shortcomes. Steerforth was such a kind, helpful, polite youngman to David at first, but he turns so unsrupulous when he lured poor Emily.Aunt Betsey was strange and stubborn, but she raised David warm-heartedly,and she understand Mr.Dick.The characters are not always black and white, they have their own features and emotion. While reading the book ,I feel as if the characters are talking in front of me vividly. The reason why the characters are so distinct is that they are origin from the author’s life ,from the reality.
Charles Dickens was a splendid author, David Copperfield is not only a normal autographical novel,it contains many clue. Every conflict has its sign ,and you can’t exclaim how careful David is to observe others. That is one of the reason why the story attract a wide range of readers .
Dickens had a poor childhood, just like David. His family were so poor that he couldn’t continue his study, later he was sent to work at an early age. His early experience had reflect on the novel through David’s eyes.People treat young worker badly. When David started to learn to be a proctor, he found injustice and undiscipline exist. By showing these experience, Charles Dickens, as a realistic writer, successfully reaveled the unfairness and darkness of the society. From the evil Uriah Heep,he criticised sham people who pretend to be humble, but hurting others. On the other side, the story also shows many kind and warm people, such as Aunt Betsey, who was straight and kind,Micowbers who support each other even when they are in difficulty,Agnes who protect her farther silently and strongly. From the novel, Dickens criticized the darkness of the society, but he also show the very warm aspect of human.
Last but not least, the novel shows a true law in the English socety ,that is ,only when you are working positively can you success.David changed his destiny by being deligent and honesty,he work hard to make his fortune. On the contrast ,Uriah lies and trick others to be wealthy.Eventually ,he was sent into prison.
David Copperfield ,in a word ,is a book about life.Readers can see the world from David’s growth. It is worthwhile to to read such a book.
