Book Review
David
Copperfield, written by Charles John Huffam Dickens, is not only a
story of the experience of David, but also a tale of Charles’s own,
which narrates scenes and feelings of every moment exactly and
clearly, deeply attracting me.
Charles John
Huffam Dickens had something in common with David. He leaved school
at a young age in order to earn his living, in the
meanwhile his parents were sent to prison like
Mr.Micawber. When he grew up, he kept the minutes of the
congress and assisted in a law firm. In addition, his experience
about love and marriage was reflected in this novel through
describing David’s attitude towards Emily, Agnes and Dora. In other
words, his life was similar to the story and he also created some
plots and details to express his own ideas and criticism to society.
Then, according to this novel, David’s experience can
be divided into three parts.
The first part is his tough but happy childhood.
Although his father died early, his lovely mother Clara and caring
servant Peggotty made his life warm and colorful. However, along
with his mother getting married with Mr. Murdstone, something
changed greatly and broke down the steady life. His mother died
later and he had to work in a factory instead studying. After
suffering a lot of difficulties, he was determined to look for his
aunt, Miss Betsay Trotwood, on his own.
The second part is the period of youth. Due to the
acceptance and assistance of his aunt, he started his new life. He
became independent during the period of Getting acquainted with
Agnes, becoming a secretary, endeavoring to report the debates in
parliament, getting married with Dora.
The third part is that
David became a sensible adult after facing many accidents.
Emily ran away with James Steerforth, his aunt was bankrupt, his
marriage with Dora was not as happy as he had imagined…Finally,
everyone had their own endings. David also found his goal of
becoming a writer and then led a happy life.
From my perspective, the biggest turn was that David dared to
escape from the place he used to live and he can put into practice.
Though he is a little child, he was mature enough to manage to earn
money and arrange for the unknown trip. In spite of the robbery, he
still insisted on his choice and made a living through selling his
clothes. Hunger, cold and loneliness did not stop his steps.
Obtaining energy from memories, relying on his quality of
persistent, he started his brilliant life eventually. In reality, we
always intend to change our ordinary life, but the fact is that we
lack bravery. Were we not
afraid of unknown and bold in making decisions, we can benefit a lot.
The growth of David is not always unfortunate and grey, because
there were kinds of benign people, who lighted up David’s life. For
example, Peggotty, she loved David from the bottom of her heart, who
was the only one caring and worrying about David when he was trashed
and separated from others. Many people, like Mr.Peggotty, Ham,
Mrs.Gummidge and some person who lived in Yarmouth, made David feel
at home again. Miss Betsay Trotwood, she accepted David and brought
up he since then. “Make the child happy and useful.” she said. Her
education and suggestions were beneficial to David’s growth.
Mr.Micawber and Mrs.Micawber, the landlord of David, were optimistic
and just. Since Mr.Micawber
showed the proof of Uriah Heep's wickedness, David was able to solve
the difficulty of bankruptcy.
Because of these people
,
David could grow further and become an
excellent writer. They set good examples for David and taught him to
keep his virtues. Therefore, David could get opportunities and
assistance from others, show the talent of writing and succeed
eventually. Do we still keep our original
characters? To live easier
, we become indifferent to others and are not willing to do
anything with no sake. Is it a terrible thing that we are becoming
this kind of person?
Without doubt, this novel succeeds, which states Charles John Huffam Dickens’s mental world by the combination of fact and imagination. It is the sufferings that lead to the success of David and Charles John Huffam Dickens. Nowadays, we still need to learn from the growth of them and reflect on ourselves.
