Jack London was born in poverty and dropped out of college at Berkeley, California. And when it came to 19 , he chose to join the gold team and went to Klondike, Alaska. However, after a long journey full of snow and mountains,he found nothing gold but rich experience in the north. With those adventurous and valuable journeys,he wrote the book The call of the wild , which was the second novel he wrote back to California from the north and deeply influenced by the experience of the north.
The protagonist of the call of the wild is a dog named Buck. He is high gifted with strength, intelligence, and is a "nearly Super" dog. Therefore, it’s not hard for us to guess that Buck still can live well even in the north.One day, he was turned to the north by a greedy chef as a sled dog, and Buck showed extraordinary adaptability. He immediately understood “the law of stick and teeth” from human beings, and soon learned excellent sled pulling skills . More importantly, he was full of strong ambition not only for survival but to be more powerful. For this reason, he slept in the snow, stealing food from other dogs secretly, even killed the previous dog as the leader.
Buck's talent is perfect. Its body is very strong and its mind is decisive and resourceful. Jack London once read Origin of species so he understood the law of "survival of the fittest", and gave Buck almost all the abilities that are conducive to survival. The most interesting thing is that the author also gave buck the spirit of struggle. For Buck, the stick in the hand of the dog trainer in the red sweater is actually the hammer in the hand of the blacksmith.By hitting again and again,the delicacy part given by the original "civilized society" on Buck was gradually lost, and then the cruel natural law was embedded in his genes, making him a sharp steel knife. Buck who was with high living conditions didn’t not choose to escape but to adapt to the harsh environment after such a dramatic change . That is ambition. And he not only wants to survive in this ice and snow, but also to become the leader of all dogs, to live with honor and pride.
Jack London fully reflects the social Darwinism in this book, "nature is cruel, and the law of jungle is the only truth". But in today's society, we live in a peaceful and material environment, which is not as full of the threat of Desperado and cold and death as Alaska at the end of the 19th century. Therefore, a number of us have chosen a easy life.So we can see that nowadays, small video apps has a large number of users.Instead of always facing the threat of death like Buck,there is no need to worry about whether we can survive or not tomorrow.However, competition always exists.People with mo wildness at all may be eliminated in this society.Neither should we become a careerist with no compassion nor a loser in contemporary society.
Jack London's depiction of the north is full of danger, and people are greedy and ambitious.And he finally committed suicide cause of inner contradiction.So we must have goals ,and in the course of achieving your dreams ,don’t ignore the loved people like Thornton,who can give you warmth and save you from darkness at the critical moment.
