The Sonnets is a collection of poems which totally contains 154
love poems written by William Shakespeare. The whole book can be divided
into 2 parts: in the first part, the author enthusiastically praised his
so-called "friendship", which was very close to agape and
philia, I think, with a young nobleman; the second part strongly
expressed his love to a "Dark Lady", which can be interpret
into eros or philia from my point of view. William Shakespeare
created a brand new type of sonnet which has a strict structure. Such a
pattern endowed his poems with a distinguished aesthetic taste and
unique style. Among these poems, I am particularly fond of Sonnet
12, in which the author bemoaned that youth would not endure under
Time's scythe and encourage his friend "Fair Lord"to brave it
by "breeding". The metaphorical violets and trees stirred up a
symphony which absorbed me into deep ponder of life and beauty. When
reading this book, I was impressed by its beauty, and surprisingly found
out that William Shakespeare was a so emotion-rich person. The
impressive expression and the imaginative scene it depicted seemed to be
a magic hand, which would help you put aside all the concerns and
tiredness, and get you obsessed with it. Through that enjoyable reading
experience, my interest in English literature was lit up quite a few
times. Although the ancient English grammar puzzled me a bit at first, I
gradually learn to admire this type of English, and had a little
knowledge of ancient western culture. In general, I think, this book
house me a lot in English reading and writing, and give me a chance to
have a taste of western literature.
