Book Review of David

Book Review of David Copperfield Recently I’ve read the book David
Copperfield written by Charles Dickens, a famous writer of 1800s. Now I
am going to have an brief introduction to the book and put forward my
opinion on the main idea of this book which deeply impressed me while
reading. Foremostly, here is the outline of the book. David
Copperfield is a novel written as a biography of the main Character,
David, in the first -person narration. The book is mainly about David’s
life experience from his childhood to his middle age: David experiences
his miserable childhood before he meets his aunt. Then, after being
adopted by his aunt, Mrs. Betsey, he begins to go to school and
gradually encounters a lot of people who play important roles in his
life. With these people, he experiences romance, gain friendship, and
also once be backstabbed. But thanks to the guidance of his aunt, David
finally becomes a warm-hearted, earnest and diligence man, who always
holds an optimistic attitude towards his life. At the end of the story,
David gets married with his lover, Agnes, and live with great happiness
in the rest of his life. What a wonderful book, isn’t it? Then, Here
is my comprehension to the main idea of the book David Copperfield.
First, from David’s life experience, the author, Dickens suggests that
money is the root of evil, and shows his hatred for the greedy and
ruthless bourgeoisie. In the book, there are a series of tragedies
caused by money. To name several of them, David’s mother Clara is
deceived to get marry with Edward Mudstone, who is greedy about her
possession, then she suffers from great torture and was beaten to death;
under the lure of money, Emily elopes with Steerforth but is finally
discarded by him. These tragedies chill me and arouse my disgust to the
society illustrated in this book, therefore, I think Dickens is
successful in conveying his own idea and gaining sympathy. It’s very
clear that Dickens makes his point. Second, in the book, Dickens
reveals his ardently love for humanity, and points out that the
capitalist society is in sore needs of more humanity. That’s why Dickens
portray the main character, David, as a man full of humanistic features.
Even though David has experienced misfortune, poverty and defection, he
remains his goodness and optimistic attitude towards life. Also, the
figure of Mrs. Betsey and Peggotty are two other ideal images of
Dickens. They are generous about their money and devotes their kindness
selflessly to their loved ones. Thus, Dickens chooses them to offer
David guidance, shape his personality and help him finally grown up as a
man with the brilliance of humanity. In general, Dickens criticizes
the darkness of capitalism, and glorifies humanity, and I hold the same
attitude as Dickens’s. To be concrete, the thirst for wealth can
sometimes ruin people’s belief of love and even destroy people’s life,
at the same time, morality and humanity are essential to the society
because they can bring us harmony and well-beings. They are what I learn
from the fate of Uriah Heep and the growth of David Copperfield. The
book teaches me a lot in facing with the misfortune bravely and
maintaining good virtue even after great torture. I realize that if you
success in doing so, you can be your own hero and spread optimism to
people around you. The book David Copperfield gains a great popularity
all around the world and it spreads the burning passion for humanity. It
do exert a profound influence on both individuals and the whole society.
All in all, David Copperfield is a brilliant book that is worthy to be
read.
