book review
董双玉
The work implicitly shows that Daisy's pure, open, free and uninhibited
character is more desirable than the European social fashion, which is
elegant and generous in appearance and banal and narrow in essence. The
novel USES an "inner point of view" to observe and judge the
whole event through the eyes of winterbourne, the fictional character.
Winterbourne, who was influenced by both European civilization and
partly admired Daisy, constantly revised his position and viewpoint and
tried to maintain his "conscience" and insight under the
influence of both. This determines that his observation and judgment
have a certain "detached" and "objective" value, so
as to make the whole story believable and lasting.
