"The Great Gatsby" is a book descripting the Amercian society
in 1920s. Nick was a poor clerk, who broke into the thrift and
materialistic world of millionaire Gatsby. To his surprise, he found
that his heart was hauled by the green light on the riverbank, where
lived his beloved Daisy. At this part, the story moved back to introduce
the development of the character Gatsby, who was poor and not
prestigious in the past. After a long departure of his beloved Daisy, he
struggled to earn money to be rich, only for getting back his beloved
girl. However, since Daisy had become a secular material girl, she
deceited him and slandered him to death. I felt extremely pitiful and
indignant after reading the ending. However, if we search for the deeper
implicature of the story, you will find that it is actually the
reflection of "The American Dream". It was an ideal dream for
the pursuit of material and the desire to become a "big man".
Why did it clapse day by day? The reason is that there is no society
depending only on the high-level material to maintain permanent interest
and hope, since we are individuals demanding for spiritual satisfaction.
A dream with only desire for the wealth is a mirage at all, just like
the tragedy of Gatsby's life.
