He is not good at repairing the machine, but there is neither a mechanic nor any passengers with him.

To rescue the poor pilot, I suggest that we should first use a robot like a UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). While people are difficult to walk on the desert, a UAV can fly faster and have a better view so that it can help find the lost pilot quickly. We can set a camera on the UAV to locate him. As long as the UAV successfully find him, we can send people to save him. Because it is very easy for people to lose the way in the desert, the people sent to save the pilot should be accompanied by some trained animals, such as dogs. Dogs have a good sense of direction and smell. With their help, people can find the troubled pilot more easily.

At the same time, the UAV also can bring some food and drinks to the pilot to keep him in a good physical state. It can also be equipped with an advanced communication equipment to help the pilot communicate with his family members or friends, making him get rid of the loneliness and stress. Moreover, the UAV can then bring some necessary tools or components to the pilot so that he can repair the engine more quickly and finally he may have the chance to fly his plane to leave the desert.
