Great Expectations
燕子@
Great Expectations is a work of critical realism full of romantic
elements. The work mainly describes the status quo of classes in
Victorian England after the Industrial Revolution, and reveals the
social reality of the Victorian period. Dickens despised the hereditary
aristocracy and respected the people who made their fortunes by labor.
The living standards of the working people at the bottom and the upper
classes in the book are vastly different, but their humanity and
morality are far superior to those of the aristocracy. The sharp
contrast between PIP's country life and London life in the book, as well
as the change of his personality, reflect the author's criticism of the
upper class flashy society, as well as his yearning and calling for the
natural and simple country life.
