Buck's change
芙溧
When Jack London wrote The Call of the Wild, he chose a novel subject:
dogs. It is not the biological dog in Fabre's scientific stories, nor
the imaginary dog in myths or fairy tales, nor even the dog who plays a
small role in human society. It is the dog who plays the lead role in
the book and shocks readers' hearts with its life, character, taste and
deeds in the ice and snow. The book features the main character Buck and
his many canine companions, including his "enemies". He learns
from experience. His long-gone instincts revived. Dimly he remembered
the youth of his race; the ancient skill recorded in heredity by his
ancestors became his skill. At the same time, his primitive wildness,
his attachment to the wild life also revived. He even sat in the
wilderness and gave a long howl to the moon, especially at night when he
heard the wolf howl. Finally, after his beloved master was killed by the
Indians, he returned to the jungle and became a group of wolves,
completing his complete metamorphosis from civilization to barbarism.
Ironically, it was civilized people who caused his degeneration.
