Who on earth killed the man?
It is very typical of O.Henry to end the story in this way.To be honest,I am shocked by the final result of this young man.He was so deeply in love which should have brought people warmth and happiness.Instead,he died, desperately and tragically. Was it the sense of failure to find the girl that killed him?Was it the desperation for love that led to this suicide?Obviously, the answer is yes. However, who on earth caused all of these?
From the novel,we can see that the young man didn‘t know the girl who he fell in love with killed herself. He just couldn’t find her,for which he was so desperate that he killed himself too.
Before his suicide,he had asked the housekeeper whether this beautiful girl had lived in the room.
We all know the housekeeper’s answer. She lied. She told this young man that she didn’t have such a vacant, for her own interest. Her word destroyed this young man’s final hope, which is the direct factor of his death. There is a detail in the ending. While the poor man drove the strips into every crevice around windows and door, turned the gas full on and laid himself upon the bed, those unwholesome worms were gathering together, had a party and talked about the dirty things they had done.Comparing these two different situations, you will find it quite sarcastic. From the novel,we can consume that the housekeeper represents cruel, selfish bourgeoisie who only cares about their own benefit. As for the young man,he represents the lower class who is exploited by the
former. The author criticized these selfish people, called them as “worm”,while he showed great sympathy for the poor man. Those greedy people, they are the real murderers!Their selflessness as well as their coldness
made the tragedy happen.
Another detail we should notice is the author’s changing of writing style. We all know that O. Henry’s endings are always out of expect, but within people’s understanding. Moreover, the endings usually have something positive and give people a little warmth. This one, however,is quite different from others. The negative feelings are almost everywhere in the essay. The atmosphere of deep sorrow never fades. The detailed descriptions of the furnished room add mystery to the essay. In a word, This novel is a fairy unique one in O. Henry’s works. Then there comes the question. Why?Why on earth did the author change his writing style? As far as I am concerned,Mr. Henry intended to reveal the ugly and dirty perspective of capitalist society and criticized it in a serious way.Suppose what will happen if everyone only believes in money?People will become selfish and only care about themselves. The society will become colder and colder before it is finally destroyed. The society needs to be woken up!Due to this,Mr Henry changed what he always did and created such a wonderful novel.
In short,The furnished room gives me too many suggestions.Meanwhile,it is also a warning to those greedy groups of people. After finishing the book,I just want to show my greatest admiration to the author, thanks to whom,we learned a very helpful lesson.
