The Great Learning

The Great Learning tells us that, “From the supreme existence down to the simplest commoner all are guided by a single principle: that the cultivation of one’s individual character constitutes the core of all attainment.” In ancient times, self-cultivation is the basis for men of noble characters to put their royal houses into proper balance, establish orderly rule in their kingdoms, and cause the light of their inner moral force to shine forth before the entire world. 

Today, self-cultivation is also the core of solving major problems in our lives. We also need to achieve personal value and social harmony through self-cultivation. To achieve it, we have four methods, including extending correct conceptual grid to all things, expanding to the utmost the range of comprehension, achieving a state of integral wholeness in the inner depths of consciousness and setting straight the seat of emotive and cognitive faculties. 

Among them, the first two methods mainly focus on understanding things and acquiring knowledge; While the latter two methods mainly focus on inner cultivation. Combine the two parts can we achieve the purpose of self-cultivation.

The first two methods can be reflected in many aspects of our pursuit of knowledge and practice. We have known that only when one sets the goal can one reach a state of unwavering stability. For college students, setting firm goals first can we make good performance in our major. Besides it, we should also learn knowledge of economy, law, science, and history to broaden our horizons. At the same time, we should keep a skeptical attitude towards authority and find the truth through practice.

The latter two methods aims to stress “seek truth from facts”. When it comes to the way of realizing it, as The Great Learning mentioned, the method of “Shen Du”. A man of noble character should keep cautious when he’s alone. For us, we are supposed to set strict standards for ourselves and be ready for various challenges. 

After knowing the method of self-cultivation, we should put it into practice, actively and boldly. In the 21st century, a large number of senior talents are needed in various fields to accelerate China's economic development and technological advancement, accelerating the pace of connecting China with the world. Accordingly, modern society puts forward higher requirements for college students. In order to adapt to the development of society, we must strive to improve our all-round ability. Only in this way can we better contribute to the construction of our country.
