As we pursue the behaviour of a gentleman in terms of personal conduct
and cultivation, it is all the more important for us to be disciplined
in our lives and to treat the rich and the poor correctly. Tzu said,
"A gentleman should not seek satiety in his food or comfort in his
dwelling." A gentleman does not seek satiety in his food or comfort
in his dwelling." Wealth and nobility are the desires of men, but
if they are not attained in the right way, they will not be dealt with;
poverty and lowliness are the evils of men, and if they are not attained
in the right way, they will not be dealt with." Wealth and riches,
which everyone desires, will not be accepted unless they are obtained in
the proper way; poverty and lowliness, which everyone detests, will not
be shunned unless they are resolved in the proper way. It is evident
that spiritual pleasures are far superior to material ones. This is a
time when the smell of copper is everywhere, when the heart is often in
a state of impatience, and it is difficult to calm down and think
mindfully. We are so busy, so busy, so busy that we don't know what we
have done or what we have done. We are often cautious and think twice
about things. We often look around us with suspicion and wonder whether
we have deceived ourselves, others have deceived us or the world has
deceived us. Some people often hang on their mouths the saying, "I
would rather have the world suffer from me, never let the world suffer
from me." And so, for the sake of their own acreage, or even to get
benefits that are not their own, a horrible collusion begins. The name
of the game is: "I'm doing this for a living, and that's how life
is supposed to be, and if you peel off the skin, who is more noble than
anyone else? Yes, the world is a cruel place, where the fittest survive
and the unfit are eliminated. But if the world continues in such a
vicious circle, and eventually reaches a dangerous state where everyone
is in danger, how can we save our children and how can we gain peace of
mind? The reason we live this way is to keep ourselves alive, and then
to live well. But is it really what we want to do, to be in fear all day
long? In fact, when we advocate Confucius' idea of the
"gentleman", we are not saying that we should compromise our
own interests in order to fulfil the interests of others. Rather, we are
looking at the world from the perspective of development. In this world,
each person is not an isolated island, but is connected to the vast
continent of the world. At times, to harm the interests of others is to
harm one's own interests in disguise. So it is a good idea to use the
idea of a gentleman's harmony and difference to guide one's approach to
the world. This is a book worth reading and I hope that such an
excellent translation will be widely disseminated.
