mundane world in pursuit of love and not yielding to Aledberg. In the
book, after she returned from the D'Urbervilles, when her mother learned
that it was true that such a thing had happened, other women did it, and
Tess decisively said: Perhaps all other women should do it, only I can
see from this that Tess has challenged traditional concepts.
