At the beginning of the book, although the Tess family was poor, they
lived well. However, when Tess's father, John Derby, was told that such
a poor vendor was actually a descendant of the ancient D'Urbervilles, a
very noble and prominent family, her parents asked her to go to the
wealthy Mrs. D'Urbervilles' house to seek relatives. She had a simple
nature and disliked being social and did not agree to go, but later on,
She was worried that her drunken father would have an accident when he
went out to deliver honey to the city in the middle of the night, so she
ran an errand with her younger brother for him. However, there was an
accident on the way - the only horse in her family driving the car was
run over and killed, and losing a horse was like losing the tools used
to make a living for a poor family like them. When burying this aging
and emaciated horse, several children burst into tears, but Tess did
not. His face was pale and expressionless, as if he believed she was the
murderer, as described in the book. Then she carried a sense of guilt -
it was her own negligence that caused the crisis in family life, her
filial piety to her parents, her care for her younger siblings, and her
strong sense of responsibility - the responsibility to help the family
out of difficulties.
