Hume used an almost perfect logical system to tell the cruel truth about knowledge. The summary of experience is unreliable, and assumptions are always pushed back to the middle again and again. Both experience and reason have fatal weaknesses, which is inevitably heartbreaking. But we should not sink into this doubt either. Understanding is fundamentally unreliable, and it does not mean that understanding is completely unreliable. From a historical perspective, our understanding has indeed made this world a better place. The real benefit of reading Hume is that when we understand that human understanding is fundamentally unreliable, we will develop a fearless power of "authority". This fearlessness allows us to uphold justice and truth even when we are alone on the path of seeking knowledge and truth. When the self is not considered, there is no room for pride or humility. When authority is not taken into account, there is no room for arrogance and prejudice.
