Virtue, Huge-eye And Money For
The gold cap and the jump are really two representative elements of Gatsby’s tragedy . Gatsby built a great villa for his Daisy in West Eggs, and sacrificed himself for Daisy’s crime. At the end of his story I seem to have witnessed a frog wearing a gold cap for masquerade. The great frog jumped up for his soul-mate to take a bullet for her......
Francis Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) achieved his great reputation in the literature history of American by the book ”The Great Gatsby” in 1925. The book was also praised by Ernest Hemingway. Due to its great effects in The Lost Generation, Fitzgerald also became a spokesman for the generation. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a satisfying time at the end of his life due to his wife’s luxury life and disease.
There are three meaningful and special things that I suspect is what the very things that that the author wants to convey them to us and the Generation of Jazz. These things symbolized a balance that all of us should bear in mind forever.
First, the virtue of being honest and respectful to others.
In Gatsby’s story, we could see a lot of cases that were accusing the shameful behavior of people. Tom didn’t have absolute love for Daisy, and Daisy took advantage of Gatsby’s love. Nick loved Baker but they were not sincere to each other. Even in the banquet in Gatsby’s house, we could still notice that women showed their wrath for their husbands’ disloyalty to them. How to keep a clear mind when we were among the atmosphere of the middle-advanced society in New York city during the period of 1920s? I can not tell what exactly it is. Perhaps just the basic trust and freedom for everyone were what the generation really needed, instead of bare money relationship and endless suspicion.
Then we come to the huge eye, which is mentioned in the story for three times. Perhaps it might be a sign of belief to God. Every time the characters in the book had a bad intention or before they came up to a wicked idea. There would be a description for the huge unrealistic eye. For it would see what happened in the world without a word, people were unaware of it. However, belief was just another thing that most people could never possess.
If you were more careful about the plots of the story, and then you would be aware of the other pair of eyes, which belonged to Gatsby. It would give the reader a deep impression of the description for his eyes. The eyes kept watching at the feast below them, quietly and sadly, just liked the eyes of God.
Now there would be money talk. Lumber-some topic are always talked in the last part, for nobody wants to talk about it. It transpired that the most tortuous things were mentioned frequently during the specific period. Rich or poor, people were so fascinated about the money century. Temptation was everywhere. It was human nature for girls like Daisy to run after a good life. However, sometimes no one could figure out what happiness really is. So when Gatsby left her unwillingly to join the army, Daisy just did what she should do. Because given that we could not realize the secret of happiness, we preferred to picking up the happiness in front of our eyes. Money then was what Daisy concerned about first.
“Her voice was full of money.” He said suddenly.
After the three elements have been illustrated, we will have a general idea about what happened in the middle west of American in 1920s. When we are getting through the sentences, trying to feel the three elements is necessary. You may have no idea about why Daisy didn’t like Gatsby anymore, and why Tom had an inamorata made her husband to shot Gatsby death. But with the three elements you will finally figure out how great Gatsby is.
To give the end of the story, the author went on,”Tomorrow we will run faster, stretch our arms farther, and one fine morning-So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back carelessly into the part.” The Jazz Generation was really The lost generation. But it was not what Fitzgerald wanted to see. Here, he indicated that tomorrow we would be better and cherished the memory of the specific period. It reminds me of the old classic poem---
“I shall be telling this with a sigh. Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I ---I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”[1]
