The Value of Death
The Five Boons of Life, written by Mark Twain narrates a story that a fairy brought five boons of life fame, love , riches, pleasure and death to a man, telling him that there was only one valuable. The man chose pleasure, love, fame and riches one by one but they were wrong. When he realized death was valuable, it was too late. The fairy gave death to a little kid and the man got the wanton insult of Old Age.
In Mark Twain’s opinion, death is the most valuable thing because pleasure, love, fame and riches are not gifs but merely lendings. They are temporary disguises for lasting realities- pain, grief, shame and poverty. At first I don’t agree with the author because I hold a view that people must go through both happiness and sadness because life is just like this, and I think that people choose death just escape real life. But later I understand what Mark Twain really want to express: only if we understand the value of death will we cherish all the things we possess including pleasure, love, fame and riches. It makes me understand the meaning of death more than ever before.
Steve Jacob said that regard every day as the last day of your life. Yes, when we know that we may die some day we don’t know we will understand what we really want to do and we will try our best to do it and cherish everything in our life, which may make our life more meaningful and wonderful.
In a word, The Five Boons of Life is so great a book that it makes us be grateful to life and cherish it and try our best to fulfill it, leading a meaningful life.
