Tess's reflection
罗文柳
Tess of the d'Urbervilles consists of seven parts, describing the
disillusionment of a pure woman. Both the compelling plot and the
distinctive writing style of this book have left a deep impression on
me. However, after reading this book, the protagonist Tess's character
traits and tragic fate are the most impressive and enlightening to me.
Tess embodies the beauty of human nature, being beautiful, filial, pure,
strong, and rebellious. Born into a poor family, as the eldest daughter,
she bravely takes on the family responsibilities and faces challenges
and difficulties in life. She pursues purity and, in her relationship
with Alec, though she was violated, she refuses to be a plaything of the
wealthy. However, as a female character of that era, Tess is also timid,
inferior, traditional, and conservative. Tess has not completely freed
herself from the shackles of traditional morality. In her heart,
traditional values still exist. When Tess was criticized by the
villagers for her violation and child, she considered herself guilty and
a sinful embodiment. In her love with Angel, Tess was in a subordinate
position, loving him humbly. Tess's own weak and conservative nature,
coupled with her parents' desire for wealth and status and the cruelty
and injustice of the patriarchal society, pushed this young girl step by
step into the abyss and the end of her life. We should learn from
Tess's strengths and also gain enlightenment and growth from her tragic
fate. We should not be wrapped and constrained by the guise of family
love and traditional feudal concepts. In the new era, everyone is
equal,we should pursue being true to ourselves, adhere to our own values
that we believe are correct, and not be easily influenced by wordly eyes.
