《双城记》的书评
廖雅婷
The book is a long historical novel written by British writer Charles
Dickens, which was first published in 1859. Based on the French
Revolution, the novel tells the story of enmity between Dr. Manette' s
family and the Defarge couple. The book profoundly exposes the social
contradictions that intensified before the French Revolution, strongly
criticizes the dissoluteness and cruelty of the aristocratic class, and
deeply sympathizes with the suffering of the lower classes. In the
novel, a series of acts such as brutality, seizing women, disregard for
human life, etc. by the brothers of Marquis de Evremonde run counter to
the humanitarian spirit advocated by Dickens. Demonic forces like this
will be spurned by the society. The brothers of Evremonde are a
microcosm of the aristocrats at that time, and the image that goes
against the humanitarian spirit will be abandoned by the people, just as
the instantaneous outbreak of the French Revolution in the novel is the
inevitable trend that the French rulers go against humanitarianism,
which clearly conveys the author's humanitarianism. In the novel, Dr.
Manette returns good for evil, suppresses his natural hatred of the
Evremonde family for the sake of his daughter' s happiness, accepts
Charles with a tolerant attitude, and Caton, who deeply loves Lucy in
the end, replaces Charles with the guillotine for Lucy' s happiness, all
of which reflect Dickens' humanitarian thought.
