In the novel, Dr. Manette returns good for evil, suppresses his natural hatred of the Evremonde family for the sake of his daughter' s happiness, accepts Charles with a tolerant attitude, and Caton, who deeply loves Lucy in the end, replaces Charles with the guillotine for Lucy' s happiness, all of which reflect Dickens' humanitarian thought.
