The Time Machine can be said to be the grandfather of the time travel genre. First published in 1895, it is considered "the first year of science fiction" and made its author famous. His works are not whimsical, but the setting of the big framework and background, and more about human nature. Wells's mysterious time travelers travel 80,000 years or more into the future to witness the decline and demise of the human race. It's an experience that goes back to the source.
