After reading Tess Tess, as the representative work of Thomas Hardy,
not only left a strong mark in the history of English literature, but
also a shining pearl in the treasure house of world literature. This
work takes the protagonist Tess's experience as the main line, and
through her life course, reveals the disintegration of the small peasant
economy and the pain of poverty and bankruptcy experienced by farmers
after the capitalist society invaded the British countryside at the end
of the 19th century. Tess's fate is full of tragedy. She is a
beautiful, pure, kind rural girl, but because of family poverty and
social oppression, she has to accept a man she does not love - Alec's
proposal. This choice not only made Tess physically hurt, but also
suffered great pain in spirit. She spent her life trying to escape
Alec's shadow, but ultimately failed to do so. The conflict between
Tess and the society is mainly reflected in the double persecution she
is subjected to. On the one hand, she suffered moral and religious
censure from society and was regarded as an unclean woman; On the other
hand, she was economically exploited and oppressed, unable to escape the
plight of poverty. This double persecution made Tess suffer in spirit,
and finally embarked on the road of crime. Tess is a female image with
strong personality and resistance spirit. She dared to pursue true love
and defy an unjust fate. She showed amazing courage and conviction in
her fight against Alec. However, her resistance ultimately failed to
change her tragic fate, which reflected the oppression and restriction
of women in society at that time.
