Veblen’s insight is its "foresight": the problems he identified in 1918—bureaucratic governance, academic utilitarianism, vocationalization—persist globally. This is not just a "criticism of America" but a warning to all universities trapped in "scholarship-commerce tensions": education cannot be a vassal of commerce, or it loses its essence.
