F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (1925) is a tragic story about
the empty American Dream set in the 1920s Jazz Age. Jay Gatsby, a
wealthy new-money man, reinvents himself to win back his lost love,
Daisy, who represents old-money privilege. His lavish parties hide his
loneliness and his belief that wealth can erase the past. Narrated by
Nick Carraway, the novel contrasts West Egg (new money) and East Egg
(old money), showing how class divides separate Gatsby from Daisy.
Gatsby’s hope is touching, but his dream collapses in tragedy. The green
light at Daisy’s dock symbolizes his unattainable desire. Fitzgerald’s
lyrical prose captures the era’s glitter and decay. The novel reminds us
that ambition without integrity leads to disillusionment, making it a
timeless classic.
