Book Review of The Great Gatsby
皮晨言
The Great Gatsby is a famous novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It takes
place in the 1920s, also called the Jazz Age. The story is told by a
young man named Nick Carraway. Nick moves to New York and lives next to
a mysterious millionaire named Jay Gatsby. Gatsby throws huge parties
every weekend, but no one really knows him. Later, Nick learns that
Gatsby’s wealth and parties have one purpose: to win back Daisy
Buchanan, Nick’s cousin and Gatsby’s lost love. However, Daisy is
married to Tom Buchanan, a rich and arrogant man. At first, Gatsby
seems “great” because he worked hard to become rich. But Fitzgerald
shows that money cannot buy happiness or true love. Gatsby’s dream is an
illusion. He wants to repeat the past, which is impossible. The green
light at the end of Daisy’s dock is a symbol of his hopeless dream. As
the story goes on, things end in tragedy. Tom and Daisy are careless
people. They destroy Gatsby’s life but hide behind their old money.
Through Nick’s eyes, we see the dark side of the American Dream – the
idea that anyone can achieve success and happiness through hard work.
Fitzgerald suggests that this dream is broken for people like Gatsby.
The writing is beautiful but sad. The last line of the book is very
famous: “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back
ceaselessly into the past.” I recommend The Great Gatsby to high school
students because it is short but deep. It teaches us not to confuse
wealth with love, and not to lose ourselves in impossible dreams. It is
an unforgettable story about hope, greed, and the American Dream. (Word
count: about 350)
