Book Review of Jane
Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Brontë, is one of the most influential classic novels in English literature. Published in 1847, this book tells the lifelong growth story of an ordinary but firm woman Jane Eyre, and reveals the pursuit of equality, dignity and sincere love hidden in women’s hearts. After reading this novel, I am deeply touched by Jane’s unyielding soul and firm belief.
Jane Eyre has suffered endless hardships since her childhood. Orphaned at an early age, she was bullied by her aunt and cousins at Gateshead Hall. Later, she endured hunger, cold and cruel spiritual torture in Lowood School. However, all these misfortunes never broke her. Instead, these sufferings taught her to be independent, brave and self-respecting. When she grows up and works as a governess in Thornfield Hall, she falls in love with her master Mr. Rochester sincerely.
Facing the huge gap in social status and wealth between her and Rochester, Jane never feels inferior. She firmly believes that everyone is equal in soul. Her classic line "Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless?" perfectly shows her pursuit of spiritual equality. When she finds Rochester already has a wife, she chooses to leave resolutely instead of staying as a hidden lover. She would rather wander alone and suffer poverty than give up her dignity for love.
What makes this novel timeless is not only its touching love story, but also its advanced feminist thought ahead of its era. In the rigid Victorian society, women were confined to family life and had low social status. But Jane breaks this social stereotype. She insists on economic independence through working, dares to pursue equal love, and always sticks to her moral bottom line.
In the end, Jane returns to Rochester without hesitation after he loses his wealth and sight. Their love finally gets rid of class and material constraints and achieves real spiritual equality.
Jane Eyre is more than a love novel. It teaches us that no matter how humble our birth is and how tough life is, we should never lose self-respect and independence. True love is based on equal souls, not wealth or status. Even in modern society, Jane’s spirit still inspires every one of us to keep independent personality and stick to our inner dignity.
