Book Review of The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is widely regarded as
one of the greatest masterpieces in American literature. Set in the
glamorous but empty 1920s, the novel reveals the disillusionment of the
American Dream and exposes the hypocrisy of the upper-class society.
The story centers on Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire who pursues
wealth and status solely to win back his long-lost lover Daisy. He holds
extravagant parties every weekend, pretending to live a brilliant and
unrestrained life. However, behind all the luxury and noise lies endless
loneliness and persistent obsession. Gatsby firmly believes that money
can rewrite the past and realize his dream of love, yet he fails to
realize that Daisy’s shallow vanity and the rigid class gap will never
allow his dream to come true. What touches me most is Gatsby’s sincere
and persistent hope. Unlike those wealthy but cold-blooded aristocrats,
he keeps pure faith and courage in the cruel world. Nevertheless, his
blind persistence eventually leads to his tragic death. No one attends
his funeral after his death, which sharply reflects the indifference and
selfishness of the upper class. In conclusion, this novel is far more
than a romantic tragedy. It reminds us that material wealth cannot bring
true happiness. Blind pursuit of unrealistic dreams will only end in
disappointment. It is a thought-provoking classic that deserves repeated reading.
