Book Review
Though looking like a warm fairy tale for children, The Little Prince written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry is actually a profound and thought-provoking fable specially for lost adults. The writer uses innocent and gentle words to record the little prince’s lonely interstellar travel, exposing the emptiness and absurdity hidden in the complicated adult world, and reminding every reader to keep inner innocence and cherish precious true love in trivial daily life. The little prince lives on a tiny quiet planet with three volcanoes and a proud yet delicate rose. He loves the rose deeply with all his heart, but he cannot understand her hidden sensitivity and deliberate vanity behind proud words. Feeling confused and sad, he leaves his beloved planet and travels across six strange planets one by one. On these planets, he meets a series of ridiculous and empty adults: a dictatorial king craving for absolute power, a vain man who only lives for others’ praise, a greedy businessman counting countless stars day and night, a rigid lamplighter following orders blindly without thinking, and a cold geographer who never steps out of his office to see the real world. Finally, the little prince lands on the desert of the Earth, where he meets a stranded pilot and a wise fox. The fox teaches him the core meaning of "tame", which refers to building unique and irreplaceable emotional bonds with others. Gradually, the little prince wakes up and realizes that his ordinary rose is one-of-a-kind forever, simply because he has devoted plenty of time, careful care and sincere love to her. At the end of the story, he makes up his mind to go back to his own small planet and accompany his beloved rose for ever. The sentence that touches me most in this book is: "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye." As we grow older, most adults are trapped by endless material desires. We blindly chase money, fame and social status, gradually ignore warm emotions around us, and become complicated, indifferent and utilitarian. We can clearly see all superficial appearances with our eyes, but gradually lose the ability to feel warmth and love with our hearts. Besides, the story also delivers the precious meaning of responsibility and cherishment. All ordinary things become priceless because of our sincere devotion. There are thousands of gorgeous roses in the world, but none can compare with the little prince’s rose. Similarly, our family members and friends look ordinary, but they are irreplaceable due to long-term company and mutual devotion. Growing up never means becoming sophisticated and cold-hearted. This timeless book awakens every lost adult wandering in the impetuous world. It tells us to preserve sincerity and kindness deep inside, learn to cherish every precious bond, and truly understand the eternal meaning of love and responsibility throughout our whole life.
