Book Review: The Snows of Kilimanjaro The Snows of Kilimanjaro, a
representative novella by Ernest Hemingway, comes in an affordable
bilingual edition tailored to American elementary reading level. As a
core work of the “Lost Generation” literature, it packs profound
reflections on life and regret within a simple survival story, deserving
deep reading for both language learners and literature lovers. Set on
the wild African savanna, the story follows Harry, a frustrated writer
trapped by misfortune. Stranded by a broken-down car during a safari, he
develops fatal gangrene after a small scratch. While waiting hopelessly
for rescue with his lover, Harry drifts between reality and fragmented
flashbacks, reviewing his wasted life. He abandoned his sincere writing
dreams for luxurious, empty worldly pleasures, leaving piles of valuable
stories untold. Facing approaching death, he is drowned in endless
remorse for compromising his original pursuit. True to his signature
“iceberg theory”, Hemingway uses plain, concise language to hide rich
inner emotions beneath straightforward plots. Instead of pouring out
Harry’s sorrow directly, he weaves regrets into scattered memories of
wars, travels and meaningless romances. The snow-capped peak of
Kilimanjaro acts as a powerful symbol: it stands for pure, unreachable
ideal, contrasting sharply with Harry’s messy, decadent earthly life.
This symbolic writing perfectly shows the spiritual confusion of the
Lost Generation, who wandered aimlessly after World War I and struggled
between material comfort and inner faith. The Chinese-English parallel
layout is the biggest highlight of this edition. Simplified English
sentences remove tough literary barriers, helping readers study
Hemingway’s classic writing style while understanding the plot. Priced
at only 6.9 yuan, it offers great value. Yet to fit low reading
difficulty, some obscure metaphorical details from the original text are
simplified, slightly weakening the layered symbolic meaning. In short,
the novella is far more than a story about dying in Africa. It sounds an
alarm for everyone trapped by trivial desires. It reminds readers to
stick to initial dreams rather than waste life in mediocrity, making it
a timeless American literary classic worth pondering repeatedly. (Word
