review
Wang Rongzu wrote A Paradise Lost: The Imperial Garden Yuanming Yuan, the English version of Search for the Lost Old Summer Palace. It is a clear and touching history book about Yuanmingyuan, also called the Garden of Gardens. I would strongly suggest this book to anyone who wants to learn real Chinese history.
At first, the book tells readers how beautiful Yuanmingyuan used to be. It took over 150 years to build this huge garden. It mixed soft Chinese pavilions, lakes and Western-style stone buildings. Five Qing emperors lived and worked here. Many rare artworks and old treasures were kept inside. The writer uses simple descriptions and old pictures to show its great beauty, so readers can easily picture the lively, peaceful royal life back then.
The saddest part of the book talks about its fall. In 1860, British and French armies broke into the garden. They stole thousands of precious things and set fire to all buildings. Later wars made the ruins even worse. The writer does not use angry hard words. He just records true events, old papers and clear facts. When I read this part, I felt deep sadness for the lost culture treasure.
What I like best is its easy writing style. Many history books use hard long words, but this one chooses plain English. It adds old drawings and site photos to help readers understand. It not only talks about buildings and wars, but also teaches us two meaningful lessons. First, great cultural works need our full protection. Second, we must remember history, not to hate others, but to make our country stronger and avoid such sad losses again.
This book is more than a story of a broken garden. It links art, culture and national memory. It helps foreign readers know this important part of China, and lets Chinese readers look back at our past calmly. If you love history or old garden art, this book is well worth your time. It leaves you quiet thoughts long after you finish reading.
