The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is widely regarded as one of the greatest novels in American literature. Set in the luxurious but empty Jazz Age, the book reveals the disillusionment of the American Dream through the tragic life of Jay Gatsby. After finishing the novel, I was deeply touched by Gatsby’s persistent dream and the cruelty of reality. The story is narrated by Nick Carraway, a thoughtful and neutral observer. He witnesses the whole tragedy of his neighbor Gatsby. Born poor, Gatsby falls deeply in love with Daisy when he is young. To win back her heart, he struggles to gain wealth and social status. He holds countless extravagant parties in his luxurious mansion, merely hoping that Daisy will walk through the door one day. The green light at the end of Daisy’s dock repeatedly appears in the novel, which symbolizes Gatsby’s endless hope and distant dream. What makes Gatsby “great” is not his wealth or success, but his sincere and persistent pursuit of love and dreams. In a selfish and materialistic era where everyone chases money and social status, Gatsby remains pure and passionate. He firmly believes that he can rewrite the past and regain his lost love. However, his dream is essentially illusory. Daisy, the core of his dream, is shallow, cowardly and irresponsible. She enjoys Gatsby’s devotion but chooses to stay with her husband Tom for stable wealth and social reputation. Eventually, Gatsby dies alone, misunderstood and abandoned by everyone he once treated sincerely. No one attends his grand funeral after enjoying his luxurious parties. His tragic ending fully exposes the coldness of the upper class and the disillusionment of the American Dream. Wealth cannot buy true love, and blind persistence cannot save a broken dream. In conclusion, The Great Gatsby is more than a love tragedy. It teaches us that dreams without rational judgment are doomed to fail. While we should keep enthusiasm for life, we must also recognize reality and cherish true feelings instead of indulging in illusions. The greatness of Gatsby lies in his eternal hope, which always inspires readers to reflect on dreams and reality.
