The Final Problem

薛文龙

Sharp eyes, high intelligence, excellent logical skill, super memory, devoting to maths, physics, medical science and other areas of science, etc. Absolutely you must be shocked at the man with all of these traits. This man is fabricated by a famous novelist, Arthur Conan Doyle, and his name is Sherlock Holmes, who has ever had a profound effect on detective novels world.

Feeling bored with writing too many stories of Holmes, Doyle finally made up his mind making <<The Final Problem>> come out to let Holmes dead. It made Holmes’s fans immersed in sorrow, but nothing can be forever though he is the virtual people.

Now let’s review his book <<The Final Problem>>.

At first, Holmes’s assistant Watson declares the reason why he writes the final problem. In fact, this problem ever made him feel extremely sad, but while he saw James Moriarty want to defend for his dead brother and accuse of Holmes, he finally made up his mind announcing the hiding truth.

Things must be told after Holmes broke into Watson’s house one day. For the purpose of finding a companion to take a long travel with him, Holmes came to there though with bleeding fingers. Then Holmes revealed an amazing truth -- half of cases happening in London was under the control of a man named Moriarty. But He is such a intelligent man that nobody could find his criminous trades except Holmes.“He is the Napoleon of crime.”Holmes evaluated him. And Holmes was waiting a chance to put Moriarty into jail, regardless of danger he must face up with.

Holmes told about his first meeting with this villain. Moriarty was extremely angry about what Holmes had done and asked him to stop right away. To Moriarty’s surprise, Holmes didn’t make any concession though he used death to threat him.

After Watson agreed to travel with Holmes, they successfully escaped out of Moriarty’s hand and took the train driving to Europe the next day. Holmes regarded Moriarty as a very smart man who could think the same that Holmes can think, so Holmes kept his tension every time and it seemed that he was fighting with the most powerful rival that he had met.It forced Holmes to be more considerate than ever before.

In order to try their best to escape out of Moriarty, they came to a small village of Meiringen. Under the introduction of the host, they came to the falls of Reichenbach, a holy and splendid natural place that no one wants to leave from here.

But it was this beautiful place that became the grave of both evil and angel of people. Moriarty used some methods to separate Watson and Holmes, but after Watson was aware of Moriarty’s lie, everything was too late. After he rushed back to the falls, there were nothing but a final note that Holmes left for him. Watson can’t help being lost in extremely sorrow because he can never see his best friend. In Holmes’s brief note, Holmes regarded dying with Moriarty as a great honor because he greatly dreamed of stopping all his crime.

And in this way, the greatest detective and loyal guard of justice, Holmes, left from people. We can still feel his great intelligence in his final problem, which have attracted people to be addicted to him. Holmes devoted all his life to revealing the crime, even died from this, which remained people a very justice impression.

Meanwhile, this story makes Moriarty stand on the stage. He is so intelligent that even threatens Holmes, but as for his power, the writer Doyle didn’t use a mass of words to describe it, he just discussed it through Holmes words. This is the problem that so many people can’t understand: Why don’t Doyle write more details about Moriarty and his battle with Holmes? I think, that Doyle didn’t tell us too much about Moriarty is the main reason that this villain left a deep impression on us. We can fly our imagination to think about Moriarty, which is a best way to describe him and that is the success of this book.

“If my record were closed to-night I could still survey it with equanimity. The air of London is the sweeter for my presence”Holmes said.
