After reading the little prince，i chose <the furnished room> as my next target.
This is a novel wrote by O.Henry,an American author who was widely acknowledged as the master of short story and medium-length novel.The novel,he created,"The furnished room" ,was quite exquisite.This novel was about an young man who was on his way of finding his lover.He did everything in his power to track down the one room that his lover used to live in.He managed to rent a room from an greedy housekeeper.During his stay in that room,he spared no effort to make a connection between his lover and the room he lived in.When he managed to find one connection,he rushed down the stair and confirmed his assumption.But the result he got from housekeeper made utmost frustrated.So frustrated he was,he made the saddest decision one person could make.He used the gas to kill himself.
When the young man lost the hope of finding his lover,his only companion,his heart must be full of sorrow.And he chose a extreme way to react.He chose to end his life.The time may be cruel.But there was no denying that the young man was delicate and was not mentally strong.He was not capable of handling tragedies which happened in his life.I think author was tring to tell us how fragile the people lived in his time was.What’s more,he tried to warn us that we should learn from his tragedy and make us much stronger mentally.So strong we are,we can go through any kinds of obstacles.
There was one particular character in this novel who grasper much of my attention,the housekeeper.She was the second character appeared in this novel.She was quite important in this novel.She was the one housekeeper who rented the furnished room to the young man.What’s more,she was the person who took the one last hope of finding the young man’s lover from the young man.Besides that,she was the character who reveal the truth that the young man’s lover killed herself in the same room where the young man killed himself to the readers.She was extremely essential in pushing the story to the next stage.As far as i am concerned,the housekeeper represented those greedy people who put every minds of them on the money and did not care about those people who were struggling for living in the city they lived in at all.Their apartness and unconcerned attitude led to those poor young men’s death without doubt.
As to the young man’s lover,although i have sympathy for her,still i consider her as a quite selfish person.The young man spared no effort to find his lover.We can assume that they were deeply in love with each other which means that it is reasonable to bring up the assumption that they knew each other quite well.That is to say,the young man’s lover knew how fragile and delicate the young man was,and her departure would made him feel miserable.Being aware of all those information,the young man’s lover insist on leaving him and ending her life without considering her actions’ impact on the young man.
It was a really sad story.The author used a majority of words to describe the details of the house、the atmosphere、the details of the room.All of those led to one conclusion that the young man was in a poor neighborhood.He and his lover might be in a poor condition.They both had big dreams and go all out to realize their dreams.But no matter how hard they tried,they still were in a very poor condition and they were struggling in this magnificent city.No one cared about they.They only had each other.They represent most of the poor and young people in the time author lived in.Most of the poor young people did not get the chance as those young people from relatively rich family get.The time the author lived in put money in the first place and they did not think about being fair.Not just regular people did so,government made their policies thinking about this rule as well.There were huge gap between the upper class and the underclass.Their different family backgrounds provides them with different education which make them have access to different jobs.This is one of the most important reason why the young man killed himself and why there were so many tragedies in this era.
To the most of my understanding,many factors leads to the young man’s death.And the only reason that the most of the reasons will appear is that limitation of the time the young man lived in.If our generation is wise enough,we can bring out some excellent solution to work out this kinds of limitation.That is to say,it is doable for people to reduce the number of this kinds of tragedies.
