After The Great Gatsby
When I first came across this book, I was actually attracted by its enormous movie fame, thinking that since it had been directed, it must quite fit the current taste of nowadays people, hoping to spare much effort to this assignment. But when I stepped into the 19th century world that Scott creates, I was totally appealed and attracted, not only by its novelty plot, but its precise description of every protagonist. And now I am going to make this adventurous trip you.
The image of society that Scott creates is the first character that distinguishes his work from other writers' in the same time. It starts with the sketch introduction to the experience of the hero, which at the mean time indicate the social milieu that the whole story develops in---a newly-born America, with its high speed economy blooming and prosperity of all kinds of industries. People at that time, especially the people around the hero, tend to show a strong affection to money or wealth. People are also connected by wealth, for instance, there is a scene say that a host of guest came to Gatsby's mansion every night dancing, drinking and having fun. People actually are attracted not just by party, but the wealthy Gatsby hold those parties, thinking there will be more opportunities to get to know more wealthy people who are also attracted there for the similar purpose. A series of conflicts will be established on those accurate depictions to those moral stance, mental states of every protagonist. And those plots constitude the most thrilling part of this novel.
However, the demonstration of people attitude towards money that I havementioned above is quite general and necessary, and the precise description of every protagonist makes this work more outstanding. Scott may portray a stubborn figure with whose characters don't have much turning, and he may also create a person whose nature is changing by his surrounding over time, such as Gatsby and Nick. And those changes are embodied by people's saying, behaviors and emotions, ect.
A good book can definitely arouse much feeling and emotional resonance of readers. I also have those feeling at the very beginning, it reminds me of some works and films that I've read previously. There are lots of works talking about the long lasting affection and love, a persistent lover waiting his or her beloved one back. Like there are many films talk about a woman going abroad, but her lovers is still waiting for her, the waiting ones have such a tough and persistent heart that no matter how many excellent girls in his life, from the bottom of his heart, she is the person that can't be replaced by anyone. However, no matter the result is good or not, the waiting one always suffers in a long term. They share the similar struggle, facing tough choices whether to let it go. It always moved me deeply that even there is no hope, the hero would still choose to live with the affliction. For Gatsby, he even sacrifices his life just for the love that he has faith in.
For me, it is not only a tutor guiding me towards the American literature, but also a good friend would like to share his experience with me. Whatever fame and renown that it enjoys worldwide, to me, one thing are certain: it brings me much pleasure and precious memory that I can never forget.
