Rosemary-a mirror of oursleves
A Cup of Tea is a story about a rich woman named Rosemary. Living a comfortable and wealthy life, she is actually empty inside, which drove her to bring a poor girl she met accidentally to her house one day. Though she decided to act as a kind woman, she failed when her husband praised the beauty of the girl.
After reading the story, one part of me feel pity for Rosemary. Although she lives a wealthy and comfortable life, she is empty inside and is seldom aware of the outside world. When she came across the poor girl and took her home, what she really wanted to do is to entertain herself and made her day more interesting. Still she is a girl who is lack of a sense of safety as you can see from what she said to her husband at the end of the story. When she met the girl, what she wanted to do was actually saving herself from her daily hollow life that had been eating her.She reminded me of Du Liniang, a leading role in a famous Chinese ancient play.Du liniang was in a way prisoned by the society especially by her parents. She was at the age of 16 or so, but what she could do was only reading and doing embroidery everyday.even enjoying the beautiful scenery in her garden is forbidden. She lives in emptiness, just like Rosemary. But on the contrary to rosemary, she finally explored, dying for the boy in her dream and married to him despite any obstacles.
Another part of me feel that we are Rosemary sometimes. Sometimes we dress up beautifully and wear a mask of a happy face but in our hearts we are not as good as we are seen to be. Sometimes we focus too much on ourselves and ignore what others feel. As a result, we seem to be indifferent.
Rosemary also reminds me of a rich business man in China called Chen Guangbiao. He enjoys doing charity in a high-class way very much. Whenever he donates something, he likes to hire a group of people recording what he has done and gives money to people he helped directly. Indeed it is very kind of him to help those in need, but he is like Rosemary in a way, showing off his kindness and putting others in an embarrassing situation.
In a word, A Cup of Tea is an excellent work describing a rich and hypocritical woman as well as a thought-provoking story.
