Note3
A long length of the chapter is used to introduce the rise of the imperial garden and the garden art.
From Xia Dynasty to Ming-Qing Dynasty, the developments of the imperial garden are detailedly discussed. The core of the imperial garden is pointed out in the book "Whereas a poem conceives a painting, a painting suggests a poem".
Not like the imperial garden, the garden art developed much slowlier owe to the lack of economy support and the permission of the policy. Thanks to the pursuit of private garden among the intellectual circles, garden arts are slowly develop and boom in Ming Dynasty.
Garden art is not only for Han people, it also shows its special charm for other ethnic minority. Most leaders of the ethnic minority, such as NvZhen, made imperial garden, a symbol of their palace after they conquered the mainland China.
Its detailed description clearly shows at least three the common characteristics for the imperial gardens. First, sceneries are best the architectural complexes are huge. All the things in the garden are carefully choosen and extremely magnificent. Second, the pursuit of luxury garden architectures is showed everywhere. The magnificent apperance gives an impression of heaven. Third, almost all the buildings are deliberately designed according to the mythology like Penglai to pursuit the longlive and the pleasure in immortal world.
The culture of other countries contributes to the development of the garden art. The great Tang Dynasty's extensive culture contacts with other European countries gave Tang garden a distinct foreign influence. The style in some garden details are substituted by European's designs.
LiJie and JiCheng are the famous traditional designers of Chinese garden art with huge influence in garden design. The common consensus is that their works benefit the garden art especially in Ming-Qing period in building artificial hills, lakes and courtyards.
PS. The fact that the author is a Chinese from TaiWan surprised me. His gentle attitudes toward the actrocities of the soldiers of the Eight-Power allied force leads me to believed that he is a foreigner.
