A Cup of Tea is written by Katherine Manthfield.A wealthy lady named Rosemary came across a destitute young girl in the street, who begged for a cup of tea.Rosemary took her home, offered her delicious food and was ready to look after her well. But when Rosemary’s husband Philip appreciated the girl’s beauty,Rosemary sent the girl away with three pound notes.
Favorite plot or sentence
“Pretty! Absolutely lovely! Bowled over! Her heart beat like a heavy bell. Pretty! Lovely! ”I am deeply impressed by this sentence for the reason that it revealed extreme fragility in Rosemary’s heart. She was easily caught into utmost fear merely because her husband said something unconcernedly that was of a great minority of possibility to withdraw what she had possesed.
Follow-up plot
Once again,Rosemary was asked to provide a cup of tea by a thin and shadowy little girl in the street.Suffered from the former unpleasant experience, she refused the girl without any hesitation.Philip happened to know it.He was disappointed because his wife showed little sympathy for the pitful girl.Rosemary was caught into utmost fear once again. She asked Philip in a whisper,do you still love me?
Comment
This short novel exposed human nature incisively and vividly. There was no doubt that Rosemary showed sincere kindness and enthusiasm to the girl in the very beginning. She took the girl to her bedroom to get rid of her embarrass. She moved away her sight when the girl was eating voraciously.Nevertheless, when she felt the girl was a threat to her status, she sent the girl away with three pound notes.Human nature is kind-hearted and selfless in the premise of not going against his own interest and benefit. It is hard to maintain the kindness if someone’s interest is offended. What’s worse,he might revert to unmerciful and selfish people, just like Rosemary.
