Review of A Study in Scarlet

邓俊杰

It is a strange piece of work, also as the first novel featuring Sherlock Holmes, with a strange structure which

two stories connected.

The first part is very interesting, with the legendary meeting between the detective and the doctor, and an

introduction to the characters and the case.

The second part swaps from London to Utah where we get a somewhat sympathetic back-story to the murder and his deed.

Through the description of Sherlock Holmes,we may be impressed by his analytical ability and arrogent attitude, which makes him a lousy human being more than a great detective.

Since I have a preference in detective fictions,I have read hundreds of work in this field and I can recount

some characteristic of typical detectives. But only Sherlock Holmes, who wasn't the very detectives I read first,is the exclusive one because of his logic.Although many authors think it too overstate and joke on it,the very expression had captured thousands of readers.

To some extent,Sherlock Holmes can be regarded as one of the greatest detectives mainly because of the literary talent of Conan. The dialogue is witty, filled with dry humor and entertaining. The characters are angaging and it's a nice touch that the protagonist's roommate tells the story.
