The novel is about homeless Soapy wanted to stay in prison for a long winter. Because there is no where to go in the winter. So he committed a crime on.purpose. Such as went to a restaurant to eat overload food, disburbed the law and order, stolen other's unbrella, flirted with woman, abd so on. None of these acts lead him to jail as he wanted. Finally, when he moved by anthem in church， trying to change himself and starting a new life, the police put him in prison. This novel shows tragic fate of the poor in the United States at that time.
