Embrace your childishness

The Little Prince is a famous children's short story written in 1942 by a French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupery. He once said that this is a fairy tale written for the adults "when they are children".

Oddly enough, when I read this book for the first time, I failed to understand the profound meaning hidden in those lines as a primary school student. Nevertheless, after seven years flying by, I opened it again and was totally fascinated by the purity of the words. The whole story is full of poetic solitude and a touch of sorrow, as if I was that little prince who wandered in the infinite universe.

The narrator was a pilot and he noticed that there was no one in the adult world could appreciate his whim when he was a child. The children and the grown-ups were put on opposite sides from the beginning of the story. From the little prince--an innocent and pure children's points of view, the writer satirized and criticized the hypocrisy, numbness and blindness of the adult world, showing the denial of their false values. However, those adults who had a blind pursuit of prestige, money and profit were also used to be puerile kids full of fantasy and curiosity about the world.

It got me thinking, the majority of people also drew a wonderful blueprint for the future at one time but give up when they grow up, why? For quite a few individuals, the carefree childhood made it possible for them to spend more time observing the surroundings and admiring the beauty of life. As they stepping into the adult world, they will be overwhelmed by the pressure from marriage, the housing loan, the fierce competition in the workplace, the discrimination of status, and so forth. Thereafter, those fantasies and plans will vanish like soap bubbles. This notwithstanding, there are still some people who persist in chasing their dreams and never give in to the lure and the adversities ahead of them. Whereas, those are just of minorities.

What impressed me most was some of the words that the fox said to the little prince, "It's the time you spent on your rose that makes your rose so important." It reminded me of Adam Smith, who believed that "It was when people dived into the water and found them that the pearls are valuable." In economics, this is due to that the cost of production determines the exchange value of goods. So it's the cost that makes all the important things in life meaningful. Gradually, many adults forget about this after suffering so much in the reality, however. Instead of their being immersed in accomplishing the tasks, complaints spring up endlessly for they're not doing things out of willingness. That's always the case. If they can be aware of the value and significance of the effort that they have put on the tasks, complaints won't emerge.

Although the Little Prince itself is just a fairy tale, the profound philosophy of life is contained in it. The author wrote in a deep and simple way and had a more thorough view of life and a sober reflection on life than his previous works. Meanwhile, the beauty and ugliness of The Little Prince world also indicated the author's yearning for a better reality.

Perhaps everyonehas a unique "little prince", on condition that you embrace him, then you will also embrace your fading childishness.
