Book review of The Little Prince
Recently, I have read The Little Prince which was regarded as an immortal classic philosophical fairy tale. Although I knew the book when I was in primary school, I didn't read it until now. I, a 20-year-old grown-up, have many feelings after reading this book.
The narrator of the novel is a pilot who tells the story of the little prince and their friendship. At the beginning of the story, he tells the readers that he can't find a man to talk harmoniously in the adult world, because the adults are too practical. The pilot was forced to land in the Sahara Desert due to an aircraft failure. In this occasion, the pilot makes the acquaintance of the little prince, a little prince from another planet, the Asteroid B612.
The little prince has escaped from his tiny planet, because he has some quarrel with a rose which grows on his planet. He roams among the planets and meets different kinds of adults, which includes a king, a conceited man, a tippler, a businessman, a lamplighter and a geographer. From these people he gets a conclusion that the grown-ups are very odd.
Then he descends in the Sahara on the earth. He meets a snake and a little fox. He conquers the little fox with patience and they become close friends. The little fox gives the little prince the secret in his heart that the naked eye can't see the essence of things, and only with his heart can he see everything as a gift. With this secret, the little prince finds spring water with the pilot in the Sahara Desert.
Eventually, the little prince left the earth with the help of the snake.
What impresses me the most in the book is the adults which the little prince meets during his journey. No matter the arrogant king, the idle drunkard, the busy businessman, the lamplighter who dislikes the profession but is devoted to his duty, or the stubborn geographer, they are all normal people who have been sharpened by the secular, which is in sharp contrast to the little prince. Through the eyes of the little prince, we can see the aeriality, blindness and foolishness of the adults. In simple and naive language, the loneliness and loneliness of adults are written, and their wrong values are criticized. The whole story is full of negation of "adult logic" which makes people feel the helplessness of spiritual home gradually lost.
When I was young, I was also innocent and childishness like the little prince. I was fantastic and liked to write my fantastic ideas down. For example, I often write novels which seem childish now and drew my own imaginary characters which have childish painting style and unique shapes. I had my viewpoint about everything and thought they were just like how I thought. With time going by, I found the world was complex. I have gained a lot of knowledge, but I have learned to be smooth and lost my true self at the same time. I lost my inspiration and I couldn't draw fantastic pictures or novels. It can be said that I became an adult that the little prince didn't like.
At the beginning of the book, it satirizes the unimaginative adults who never take the initiative to understand anything. For children, they always explain to them again and again, so they won't talk to adults about python, primeval forest or stars. Adults are trapped in the utilitarian world of power, desire, greed and indifference. They forget "the childhood that all adults have experienced" or even fact that they used to be children. Their cognition of people and the world is no longer out of the need of mind and emotion, but to measure the value of things by utility, material desire and inherent mode. In their eyes which are full of utilitarianism, no matter how beautiful things are, they are doomed to be judged by the standard of money.
After reading this book, I begin to rethink myself. I want to find my true self and the ability of imagination. Of course, I hope all the adults who have lost selves and are trapped in the utilitarian world of power, desire, greed and indifference can found their true selves.
