The Little Prince

The Little Prince is the masterpiece marked by tremendous enthusiasm. The author dedicates this book to the children whom grown-ups once were. It is not only a common fairy tale for the children, but also for grown-ups. After all, all grown-ups were children first. Though the language of the book is simple and accessible, it contains exquisite and profound meaning.

The book is not so much a fairy tale as a tragic story. For the most part, fairy tales like Snow White or Cinderella all have a happy ending. Whereas, the little prince dies in the desert after discovering the accurate meaning of love. Therefore, I considered it as an extraordinary fairy tale and a work of genius.

The book tells a story about a lonely and sad boy from a tiny planet, who travels to many other planets and finally comes to the earth and meets the pilot in a desert. Reading though this book, you can get many wonderful stories about various planets he visited and different people he met.

Visiting other planets, the little prince comes across an arrogant king, who commands the sun to set. And the drunkard who lives in the illusion, trying to forget his shame of drinking. Moreover, he visits the industrialist, who only enjoys calculating the numbers of money. All in all, those grown-ups are strange in the eyes of the little prince. Their only common ground is that their hearts are filled with the superficial thing-- vanity, which is eroding their souls.

It reveals the author's ironic and helpless to the modern society and grown-ups. In real life, grown-ups are often busy in the whole day, such as a fly without soul. The author hopes adults can maintain a Childlike Innocence, keeping purely and curiously attitude towards life. The passage of time, childhood away, we grew up, but wish we also have an oasis in the heart. Regardless of ages, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. But only few of us realized it.

Later, the little prince comes to the Earth where he tames a fox and made friends with a pilot whose airplane broke down in the desert. The fox tells the little boy many profound truths. For example, the fox says, "One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes." And the fox also helps the little prince to solve the problems of his finicky rose. Moreover, I was moved by the sincere friendship between the pilot and the little prince. They talk with each other in the uninhabited desert and become intimate friends.

The author Saint-Exupery enjoys flying and writing. Through writing and soaring in the sky, he experiences the loneliness of the world. The little prince was the last work he published before death. And he disappeared while executing a task a year after his book published. No one knows where he went and where the wreckage of his plane was. I thought he was the little prince who inhabited on the tiny planet. And he is still alive.
